When image compression saves the day
Modern phone cameras produce 5โ15 MB photos. That's wonderful for printing and terrible for everything else: email providers cap attachments around 25 MB, government and visa application forms often refuse anything over 1โ2 MB, marketplaces limit listing photos, and every extra megabyte on a web page slows it down for your visitors. Compression solves this by re-encoding the image more efficiently โ and at sensible quality settings, the difference is invisible at normal viewing sizes.
A quality setting of 75% typically shrinks a photo by 70โ85% with no visible change on screens. Combining quality with a maximum dimension is even more effective: a 4000-pixel-wide photo shown on a 1920-pixel screen wastes three quarters of its pixels, so resizing to Full HD alone can cut the file by 75%.
Unlike server-based compressors, this tool never sees your images. Family photos, documents you photographed, screenshots with private information โ everything is processed in your browser and stays on your machine.
Better engines than your browser's default
Most online compressors quietly use the browser's built-in encoder. This tool ships the same professional codecs Google built for Squoosh, compiled to WebAssembly: MozJPEG for JPG (noticeably smaller files at the same quality than a standard encoder), OxiPNG for lossless PNG optimization, and modern WebP and AVIF encoders when you want the smallest possible output. The engines load on first use and then work fully offline.
