Why do iPhones use HEIC — and why convert it?
Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos in HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) by default. It's a genuinely better format — files are roughly half the size of an equivalent JPG at the same visual quality, which is why Apple adopted it. The problem is compatibility: Windows needs paid codecs to open HEIC, many Android apps refuse it, most websites won't accept it as an upload, and older software has never heard of it.
So the daily reality is: someone sends you photos from an iPhone, or you copy them off your own phone, and they won't open. Converting to JPG fixes it everywhere — JPG remains the one image format that opens on literally every device.
